Prophecies for Our Time-The Beast and Little Horn of Daniel 7

Foreword:

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.”

John 16:12

In the revelation of truth, Jesus was patient and gentle with the  disciples in revealing  truth, but often He had to be plain spoken because the times and events dictated such.

I think of this verse and the Savior’s methods of dealing with men, women, and children.  I especially think of it when I approach the topic you are about to read.  For some people, this will not be the right time to hear this; for others, it will be light upon their path and it will make sense to them.  Wherever you are in your Jesus journey,  remember that truth is not dangerous.  It will bring freedom and peace to your soul:

Jesus said,

And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

John 8:32

I will bring the blind by a way they did not know; I will lead them in paths they have not known. I will make darkness light before them, And crooked places straight. These things I will do for them, And not forsake them.

Isaiah 42:16

Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

Psalm 119: 105

I encourage you to prayerfully check to see if what I am writing is true when compared with the scriptures and the historical references.

________________________________________________________________

One of the reasons I know the Bible is true and that its writers are honest is because they do not try to sugar coat the bad stuff.  We live in a world where the bad stuff is often kept secret.  Advertisers would never talk about the negatives of their product.  If they are forced to do so (medicine for example), it comes in the form of a  palatable soothing monotone voice to minimize the impact.

Being politically correct is no longer an option.  It is a requirement in our society.  But, in the Bible, God tells it like it is; it is not politically correct.  That is why many who would quote the words, even in a caring loving manner are considered uncaring and maybe even a bigot.  Many people don’t like what they hear from God’s word, but that does not change what is true.

Then, there is the matter of rightly handling the word of truth.  Often those who would teach or speak God’s word will do so in error, conjecture, or poor interpretation.  Then, throw in the work of the enemy to pervert truth and we have a world of confusion, anger, and distrust.

Before I begin this difficult study, please read the material with the desire to know truth and a prayer for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.  I try to use as many scripture as possible to reveal the gems of truth that lies within its pages.  This is a difficult topic, but it is truth.  Truth is not always found on the main highway, but lies along the narrow path.  It is not on the lips of the majority, but in the hearts of a few who seek it with all their heart.  Jesus and His word is the “pearl of great price.”

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”

Matthew 13:45-46

That said, let’s jump in…

_____________________________________________________________

Daniel saw some things that disturbed him greatly and it caused him to be sick.  I can identify with him.  Truth is not always comfortable, but it will always bring a peace that passes understanding.  Truth will increase your faith and trust in the God who made you and all creation.

“Then I wished to know the truth about the fourth beast, which was different from all the others, exceedingly dreadful, with its teeth of iron and its nails of bronze, which devoured, broke in pieces, and trampled the residue with its feet;  and the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn which came up, before which three fell, namely, that horn which had eyes and a mouth which spoke pompous words, whose appearance was greater than his fellows.

Daniel 7: 19 – 20

Daniel seems to be clear about the three beasts of this chapter and what they represented, because his only interest after his vision was to know about the 4th beast and particularly the strange looking little horn that came up out of the 4th beast.

Shouldn’t we want to know the truth about the fourth beast and the horn?  Can we know the truth?  Yes, we can!  How do we know? Because the angel comes back and explains them to Daniel.

I came near unto one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things.

Daniel 7:16

While much of the vision is yet future for Daniel, we can see his future in the interpretation and it will help us understand the basis for interpreting our future!

This 4th beast  was different from the others.  What does that mean? First of all, this beast so so different that Daniel could not find anything in nature such as the lion, the bear, and the leopard to represent its appearance nor its character.

If one thinks about it, Daniel could easily understand how the Lion with two wings and the Bear with three ribs  could represent Babylon and the Medes/Persian empire because he lived during the fall and rise of Babylon.  He also lived to see the Medes and Persians begin to become a world power. But Greece was yet to appear as was the 4th kingdom of Rome and the little horn power.

Fulfilled prophecy is more clearly understood as one looks back .  Wouldn’t you agree?  The fulfillment of prophecies past is the basis for the principles involved in interpreting those parts of the prophecy yet future. The fulfilled prophecies of Daniel were so accurate that many attempt to put Daniel’s vision at a later point so it becomes history rather than the divine hand of God moving among the powers of the earth.  This is impossible when you consider the time span covered in the prophecy.

Through archaeological discoveries, historians catch up with the word of God and validate its accuracy.  Truly, Daniel saw these visions of 4 great Monarchs before they happened.  He was there personally at the rise and fall of Babylon and the rise of Persia.  But, he was not there for the other powers that were to arise nor the time of judgement and the 2nd coming of Christ as this vision depicts.

Daniel is careful to describe the times of his visions for those in the future who would doubt.

In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon

Daniel 7:1

This time  in the 6th century BC was before the events yet to occur as described in the picture below.

Daniel 2 and 7 Comparison:

The imagery of the ferocious 4th beast and the cunning and power of the little horn, made Daniel sick.  I am sure if we were given a look into the future to see how it all ends, we would be troubled greatly too!  This is what will happen to many who read Daniel and Revelation.  The scripture unfolds the identity of the 4th beast and the little horn power. It also gives us a picture of heavenly things.

“This is the end of the account.  As for me, Daniel, my thoughts greatly troubled me, and my countenance changed; but I kept the matter in my heart.”

Daniel 7:28

As we saw from the previous study, the fourth kingdom to appear on the world scene was the iron monarchy of Rome.

At this point, let’s see the comparison of Daniel 2 and Daniel 7 regarding those powers during Daniel’s time and those yet future.  (Daniel 8 will also add to this chart, but we will fill it in when we study that chapter next.)

ChartsGraphs-5060-Comparing-Statue-and-Beasts-Daniel

Daniel 2 was a simple straight forward prophecy of 4 major kingdoms rising and falling.  The prophecy was a time line  that spoke to the diminishing value  of the metals and therefore the value of its countries, particularly in a spiritual sense..  It is finally a mixture of strong and weak as demonstrated by the combining of iron and clay in the feet and 10 toes.

Daniel 7 repeats Daniel 2, but begins to layer in detail and some facts that are difficult to accept.  Daniel 7 fills in some elements of time, but even more obvious is its attention to the power ruling just before God sets up His kingdom.

Daniel 7 does not stop at the 10 divisions (10 horns of the 4th beast), but goes further into Daniel’s future and we will see even more detail of the worlds future events when we compare it with Revelation!

New Detail of Daniel 7:

The new detail about the 4th power (legs of iron with 10 toes or the 4th beast with 10 horns ) is that three of the 10 divisions are uprooted by the little horn that speaks great things and persecutes others after it comes up among the 10 horns.

“I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things”

Daniel 7:8

The interpretation of this is clear:

And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.

Daniel 7:24

The horns represent ten kings that shall arise and the little horn is a different type of king that shall subdue three kings.

Since the symbols (metal and animals) are demonstrating a time line of succession, we have the basis to identify  the  king that arose during the 10  divisions of Rome.

There are some identifying marks in this chapter that helps us determine who was or is the little horn power.

G

1.) It will come up among the divided kingdom of Rome between the time of 350-500 A.D. (Verse 8)

2. It would be a little Kingdom. As noted by the little horn (Verse 8)

3 . It would have a man speak at the head of it. (Verse 8)

4. It would be “diverse” or different from the other 10 Kingdoms. [(Verse 24)

5. It would “Pluck up” or “subdue” 3 of the 10 divisions. (Verse 8, 24)

6. It would speak great words against God. (Verse 25)

7. It would emerge from Pagan Rom (Verse 7, 8

8. It would wear out the Saints for “time, times, and dividing a time” (Verse 25)

9. It would “THINK” to change times and laws(Verse 25)

_________________________________________________________

What power in history fits all nine traits?  What power came on the scene as Rome was being divided into the modern countries of Europe today?

It is Papal Rome.  No other power on earth fits all the features of the little horn.

Let’s revisited the 9 identifying markers and see if the papacy fits:

1. (Origin) Comes up among the divided Kingdom (Verse 8)

The Papacy came up in Rome Italy, the heart of the divided Kingdom in 538 AD.

_________________________________________________

2.  (Size) It would be a little Kingdom. As noted by little Horn. (Verse 8)

Rome is now known as the smallest country in the world.

__________________________________

3. (Communication) It would have a man speak at the head of it. (Verse 8)

The Papacy does have a head.  He is known as the Pope.

_________________________________________________

4.  (Comparative Characteristic) It would be “diverse” or different from the other 10 Kingdoms. (Verse 24)

The Papacy is diverse in that it is a “Religious” power. as compared to the other 10 kingdoms which were “Secular” Powers.

____________________________________________________________

5. (Origin actions) It would “Pluck up” or “subdue” 3 of the 10 divisions. (Verse 8, 24)

The emperors of Western Europe were largely Catholic and supported the papacy in its growth and authority.

Three Arian kingdoms, however, did not support the papacy–the Vandals, Heruli, and Ostrogoths. So the Catholic emperors decided they must be subdued or destroyed.

Here is how Dr. Mervyn Maxwell, a theologian and historian, described the results in volume 1, page 129, of his book God Cares: “The Catholic emperor Zeno (474-491) arranged a treaty with the Ostrogoths in 487 which resulted in the eradication of the kingdom of the Arian Heruls in 493. And the Catholic emperor Justinian (527-565) exterminated the Arian Vandals in 534 and significantly broke the power of the Arian Ostrogoths in 538.

Thus were Daniel’s three horns –the Heruls, the Vandals, and the Ostrogoths–‘plucked up by the roots.’ ” It is not difficult to recognize that the papacy fits this point.

It is interesting that the Vatican, home of the pope, sits near what is called the 7 hills of Rome.

6. (In the place of God) It would speak great words against God. (Verse 25).

Just as the term anti-Christ does not mean against Christ, but rather in place of Christ, the phrase “speak great words against God is better translated “speak great words concerning God..  The Hebrew word for “against” (tsad) is only used 1 other time  and it is in the previous chapter of Daniel!:

Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning (or against) the kingdom;

Daniel 6:4

One of the names of the Pope is “Vicar of Christ.” The term “vicar” comes from the Latin word vicarius, which means “instead of.”  Calling the pope the “Vicar of Christ” implies that he has the same power and authority that Christ had over the church

The Papacy claims to be the voice of God on earth. When the Pope makes a judgement on doctrine, his pronouncements are infallible:

An infallible pronouncement—whether made by the pope alone or by an ecumenical council—usually is made only when some doctrine has been called into question. Most doctrines have never been doubted by the large majority of Catholics. “

From Catholic Answers website

“The Pope can make and unmake laws for the entire Church; his authority is supreme and unquestioned. Every bishop, every priest, every member of the Church is subject to him.” Quoted in the New York CatechismThe Catholic book, “My Catholic Faith” which is based on the Baltimore Catechism, on page 251

Further evidence of Roman Catholicism replacing God and His word is in the tradition of seeking a priest to forgive sins.  Only Jesus can forgive sins.  He has attained that right through his sinless life, death, and resurrection.  To think another man can forgive sins is operating “instead” of Christ and is blasphemous.

The Bible defines blasphemy as man claiming to forgive sins

When He saw their faith, He said to him,

“Man, your sins are forgiven you.”

And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

Luke 5:21

The papacy has set up a non-biblical confessional for people to get there sins forgiven.

The Bible tells us we have direct access to Jesus:

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 4:16

Jesus said, our confession for the forgiveness of sins is tied  directly to God and not another

“If we confess our sins, he (God) is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness”

1 John 1:9.

The priest and the one confessing truly belief that sins are being forgiven through the priest:

“Does the Priest truly forgive the sins, or does he only declare that they are remitted? The Priest does really and truly forgive the sins in virtue of the power given to him by Christ.”

Joseph Deharbe, S.J., A Complete Catechism of the Catholic Religion (New York: Schwartz, Kirwin & Fauss, 1924), p. 279.

And he also claims to be God………….

“We [the popes] hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty.”

Christopher Marcellus, Oration in the Fifth Lateran Council, Session IV (1512), manuscript SC, Vol. 32, col. 761 (Latin).

“Thou art another God on earth.”

Pope Leo XIII, Encyclical Letter “The Reunion of Christendom,” dated June 20, 1894, trans. in The Great Encyclical letters of Pope Leo XIII (New York:
Benziger, 1903), p. 304.

“The pope is not only the representative of Jesus Christ, but he is Jesus Christ, Himself, hidden under the veil of flesh.”

Catholic National, July 1895.

Truly the little horn (the papacy) speaks great words “in place” of God himself.

__________________________________________________________________

7. (Roots in paganism & its practices) It would emerge from Pagan Rome  (Verse, 8)

There is little doubt here, but to let Rome answer for themselves.

“The mighty Catholic Church was little more than the Roman Empire baptised … The very capital of the old Roman Empire became the capital of the Christian empire. The office of Pontifex Maximus was continued in that of the pope.”

Alexander Clarence Flick, The Rise of the Medieval Church, pp. 148, 149.

“Whatever Roman elements the barbarians and Arians left … [came] under the protection of the Bishop of Rome, who was the chief person there after the emperor’s disappearance. The Roman Church in this way privily pushed itself into the place of the Roman World-Empire, of which it is the actual continuation.”

Adolf Harnack, What is Christianity? (New York: Putnam, second edition, revised, 1901), pp. 269, 270.

So again we see the Papacy fits the point.

______________________________________________________

8.  (Activity and time span)  It would wear out the Saints for “times, time, and dividing a time” (Verse 25)

I am going to save this time prophecy until next time so I can spend more dedicated time on confirming its accuracy.  We will see that the rule of the papacy started from 538 AD (the last opposing power against the papacy is conquered) and ended in 1798 (The pope is taken into captivity and dies).  A period of 1, 260 years as predicted by God’s word.  The Bible says after this time that the “wound would be healed” and this is the time we now live in.  The time of the healed papacy that is daily ascending in power and recognition.  The news and internet confirms this.

_________________________________________________________

9. (Attempts to change God’s word) It would “THINK” to change times and laws (Verse 25)

The papacy has made several changes to the Holy Scripture, but most importantly to the eternal law contained in the ten commandments.  More specifically, the 2nd commandment has been eliminated, the 4th commandment changed, and the 10th commandment divided into two commandments.

This is despite warnings from Jesus and many of the writers of the Bible.  Here are just a couple of verses:

From Jesus (the law giver)

For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5: 18-19

Even the smallest punctuation mark cannot be changed.  Whoever teaches anything different is in danger.  How can the Pope have authority to change anything regarding the eternal law of God?

Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

Romans 7:12

The  Roman Catholic church may “think” to change God’s law, but His law is still the same.  It is still a sin to transgress even the smallest of its precepts.

To demonstrate this attempted change, I have listed the 10 commandments (in summary) as described in the Catechism.  This is the official book of the Catholics to teach new converts:

  1. I am the LORD your God. You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.
  2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
  3. Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.
  4. Honor your father and your mother.
  5. You shall not kill.
  6. You shall not commit adultery.
  7. You shall not steal.
  8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  9. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.
  10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.

Now, compare the 10 commandments as found in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5:

  1.  You shall have no other gods before Me.

  2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them.

  3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

  4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

  5. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

  6. You shall not murder.

  7. You shall not commit adultery.

  8. You shall not steal.

  9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

  10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.

A careful comparative review will show that the Roman Catholic church leaders eliminated the 2nd commandment completely and divided the last commandment into two.  Why?

Part of the Roman Catholic worship is to pray to  the”saints” and little figurines that represent them.  While this may seem harmless, it is a direct breaking of the 2nd commandment as given directly to mankind through Moses.  It is also against the spirit of worship of praying directly to the Father through the Holy Spirit.  If the practice of praying to saints in front of their image is harmless, then let the Pope reinstate the 2nd commandment

_____________________________________________________

They have also changed the 4th Commandment as proof of the church’s authority to do so:

If you were to convert to Catholicism, you would be taught the following….not from the Bible, but from the church’s commentary on the Bible:

In the Convert’s Catechism of Catholic Doctrine, we read:
Q. Which is the Sabbath day?

A. Saturday is the Sabbath day.
Q. Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday?
A. We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church, in the Council of Laodicea, (AD 336) transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday….
Q. Why did the Catholic Church substitute Sunday for Saturday?
A. The Church substituted Sunday for Saturday, because Christ rose from the dead on a Sunday, and the Holy Ghost descended upon the Apostles on a Sunday.
Q. By what authority did the Church substitute Sunday for Saturday?
A. The Church substituted Sunday for Saturday by the plenitude of that divine power which Jesus Christ bestowed upon her!
—Rev. Peter Geiermann, C.SS.R., (1946), p. 50.

My Friends, brothers, and sisters in Christ.  The little horn power has done more than change a jot (a period) and a title (comma),  which Jesus said was forbidden.  It  has taken a harsh chisel to the immutable law of God.

10 commandments broken

But, those who would go by God’s word alone (sola Scriptura) are clearly identified as those who oppose the work of the little horn and honor every word of God’s unchanging law.  It is out of love for God and fellow man that they respect the word of God over any power who would speak great things “in place” of God:

And the dragon (Satan) was enraged with the woman (church), and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Revelation 12:17

Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

Revelation 14:12

The final conflict between the little horn (Papacy) and those who oppose its work, will be those who honor every word of God’s commandments

‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.

Matthew 4:4

It is a sad commentary that many protestant churches today wonder after and follow the little horn power by minimizing the law of God and looking for another power to be the little horn power.  For a more complete study on God’s law, please go to the category “God’s Will For Us.”

_____________________________________________________________

In the next study, we will layer in more detail concerning the time prophecy found in Daniel 7 and then look at Daniel Chapter 8.  We will then bring in the companion verses of Revelation.  The key to unlocking the prophecies of Revelation are found in Daniel.  As we will see, John saw many of the same things as Daniel.

Blessings my friend!  Make it a God day!

Part 8- Second Coming Predictions-Daniel Reveals The Antichrist

“I, Daniel, was grieved in my spirit within my body, and the visions of my head troubled me.  I came near to one of those who stood by,  and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me and made known to me the interpretation of these things:

Daniel 7: 15:16

Daniel 2 Review:

In Daniel 2, King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that he did not understand and it troubled him greatly.  None of the wise men, I call the “Fakers,” were able to help the King.  But God used Daniel and his three companions to both remind the king of his dream and give him the interpretation.

This interpretation comes straight from Daniel and needs “no private interpretation.”

Quite simply, Daniel told the king that four (4) great powers would arise.  He identified the first two in scripture as Babylon, then the dual kingdom of the Medes and Persians.  After Daniel’s time, the other two powers appear on the scene as history tells us: Greece (Belly and thighs of brass) and finally Rome (Legs of iron).

Rome was the ruling power when Jesus was on the earth teaching and dying for our sins.  It was a Roman decree and a Roman cross upon which our Lord died.  Rome continued to rule as the disciples went out in the power of the Holy Spirit and built up the church.

Also during this time, the church began to be persecuted as we will see later.

The king’s dream does not stop here.  The legs of iron are followed by the feet and toes of iron and part clay.  This identifies the fall of Rome into 10 divisions, partly strong and partly weak.  Three divisions were wiped out and there are current European countries that have roots in these tribes, but there were three, as predicted in the book of Daniel that would be completely destroyed by the Papacy:   The Heruli, Vandals and Ostrogoths.

The prophecy ends with these startling words:

And in the days of these kings  (The old division of Rome or what we now call Europe) the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.  Inasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold—the great God has made known to the king what will come to pass after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure.”

Daniel 2: 44-45

Over and over, the Bible talks of the 2nd coming as a time of destruction from the Lord.  More specifically, it is described as follows:

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.

2 Peter 3:10

It also includes the unsaved:

…turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly;

2 Peter 2:6

“For behold, the day is coming,
Burning like an oven,
And all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble.
And the day which is coming shall burn them up,”
Says the Lord of hosts,
That will leave them neither root nor branch.

Malachi 4:1

So when all the kingdoms of the earth are destroyed, God will create a new heaven (old destroyed) and new earth (old destroyed) and the “Rock” and God’s kingdom will fill the who earth.  God will be our God and we will be his people.

“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind.”

Isaiah 65:17

And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people.God Himself will be with them and be their God.

Revelation 21: 3

Daniel 7-Introduction

In Daniel 7, another dream or vision is given.  But this time, it is given to Daniel.  Like king Nebuchadnezzar, the dream troubles Daniel and he does not know what it means.  But, it is interpreted for him by the attending angels.

Like Daniel 2, we will let the Bible interpret itself and then we will check it out through history.

In this vision of Daniel, we will see that God has a way of revealing the truth and the future in a way as to prepare the heart to receive it.  Daniel 7 is a principal of repeating and expanding.  We will see the same four powers, but with more detail concerning the nature of the powers and we will see the introduction of a terrible power that comes from one of the powers described by Daniel 2.

A verse comes to mind as I write this introduction.  Jesus said to His disciples the principal I just described of preparing the heart for truth:

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.”

John 16:12

The apostle Paul said something very similar:

I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able

1 Corinthians 3:2

In the Christian walk, especially as we interact with new Christians, we should be careful to give truth only as they are ready to receive it.  We are to be:

…wise like snakes and gentle like doves.

Matthew 10:16

This vision of Daniel 7 is like meat.  It will be new to many who read this and you might not be ready to receive it or digest it, but the words are certain and can be supported by the Bible and history.  As we begin, pray for the Spirit of Truth and let the story reveal itself to you.  Keep in mind, you have a loving and forgiving Savior who desires you to find peace and comfort in Him and his revelation.

OK?  Let’s begin.

____________________________________________________________

Daniel 7-Part 1

The book of Daniel is about 4 animals that give fear and wonder to Daniel.  But, he is particularly interested in  the fourth beast and the little horn power. The interpretation is given to Daniel and it goes way beyond the time he is living even until the coming judgment of planet earth.

In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head while on his bed. Then he wrote down the dream, telling the main facts.

Daniel 7:1

This first verse is important because it gives the time and Daniel’s dream.  The first year of Belshazzar would be 540 BC.

Here is what Daniel saw that year:

“I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the Great Sea. And four great beasts came up from the sea, each different from the other.”

Verse 2 and 3

As the beasts are described, they look something like below.  Very strange!  Wouldn’t you agree?  They are animals with something unusual about each.

When we read and study the Bible, we should read it as literal unless there is some overall reason to apply symbolism.  Here we have good reason to apply the rule of symbolism because of the description of the beasts, but even more important the interpretation is given by the Bible itself for these symbols of great beasts.  To do otherwise is to lose the message God is giving us. Is that a fair statement?  I will explain as we go along.

To help us with the beginning of this prophecy, let’s look at some passages that unlock the symbolic meaning of this prophecy and others.  In Daniel’s vision, he is seeing “the four winds stir up the Great Sea.”

What do the four winds and the Great Sea represent?

Revelation describes the four winds in this passage:

After these things I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, on the sea, or on any tree…”Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees till we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.”

Revelation 7:1, 3

From this passage in Revelation, we can see that the 4 winds represent turmoil, strife, destruction.  Another passage supports this interpretation:

Thus says the Lord of hosts:

“Behold, disaster shall go forth
From nation to nation,
And a great whirlwind shall be raised up
From the farthest parts of the earth.”

Jeremiah 25:32

Even more important is the self-interpretation from this Chapter about the beasts.  In its interpretation we can see logically that the winds and sea would indeed represent nations arising out of turmoil and wars:

What are the four beasts?  Let’s let the angel of Daniel 7 tell us:

“Those great beasts, which are fourare four kings which arise out of the earth.”

Daniel 7:17

If four kings or kingdoms arise, where do they come from?  The sea of people and the winds of war.

So early in this prophecy, we can conclude that Daniel is seeing four kingdoms arise from the many people and the results of conquering wars.  It is interesting that King Nebuchadnezzar also saw four kingdoms:  Babylon, Medes/Persia, Greece, and Rome.  Then Rome is divided into 10 kingdoms.  It is in the days of these kingdoms that our Lord sets up his kingdom that shall never be destroyed by wars or strife.

____________________________________________________________

Daniel goes on to describe the four beasts in more detail:

The first was like a lion, and had eagle’s wings. I watched till its wings were plucked off; and it was lifted up from the earth and made to stand on two feet like a man, and a man’s heart was given to it.

Daniel 7: 4

2347-1st-Beastx220

The wings represent the rapidity by which Babylon conquered its foes under king Nebuchadnezzar.  But, the wings are plucked and a man’s heart is given to it.  The boldness of the Lion wanes as it comes to a close of its earthly domination.  The man’s heart compared to the Lion illustrates the weakness that came about as it lay dormant and exposed caused by wealth and luxury.

___________________________________________________________________

It is now a perfect target for the next power to arise and take its place.  This power is the dual kingdom of the Medes and the Persians and is represented by the bear that raised itself up on one side and had three ribs between its teeth.

And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh.

Daniel 7:5

1198-2ndBeastx94

Eventually, the Persians dominated the kingdom and became stronger than the  Medes.  They came up “last” as we will see in the prophecy in the 8th Chapter.  The Persians also become the dominant power.  The command to devour much flesh was obeyed and it left nothing but three bones.  These represent the three conquests of the Medes and Persians:  Babylon, Lydia, and Egypt

This power represented by the bear ruled from the conquest of Babylon by Cyrus in 538 BC to the battle of Arbela in 331 BC.  A time span of  207 years.  It fell to the next kingdom represented by the four-headed leopard with four wings of a fowl,

After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads, and dominion was given to it.

Daniel 7:6

1200-3rdBeastx94

If two wings represent speed, then 4 wings on the quick-footed leopard must represent an extremely rapid course of conquests for the next kingdom of Greece under Alexander the Great.  This corresponds with the Daniel 2 prophecy and history.

Alexander has no parallel in historic annals for suddenness and rapidity.

Rollin, Ancient History, b.15, sec.2, gives the following brief synopsis of Alexander’s marches:-

“From Macedonia to the Ganges, which river Alexander nearly approached, is computed at least eleven hundred leagues. Add to this the various turnings in Alexander’s marches; first, from the extremity of Cilicia, where the battle of Issus was fought, to the temple of Jupiter Ammon in Libya; and his returning from thence to Tyre, a journey of three hundred leagues at least, and as much space at least for the windings of his route in different places; we shall find that Alexander, in less than eight years, marched his army upward of seventeen hundred leagues [or more than fifty-one hundred miles], without including his return to Babylon”

Alexander the Great began his conquests at age 20 and lived to reign only about 11 1/2 years more.  He died at age 32 and was succeeded by his father Philip II.  Alexander spent his life in the fast lane of wars and debauchery.

Alexander’s empire was divided among his four leading generals:

Cassander (Macedon and Greece in the west)

Lysimachus (Thrace and parts of Asia on the Hellespont and Bosphorus in the North

Ptolemy (Egypt, Lydia, Arabia, Palestine, and Coele Syria in the south)

Seleucus (Syria and all the rest of Alexander’s dominions in the east.)

Next to arise on the world scene is Rome illustrated as the “dreadful” and terrible beast.”  It was different from the other powers and it  had ten horns corresponding to the 10 toes of Daniel 2:

After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.

Daniel 7: 7

There is not a beast in nature that Daniel can use to describe this fourth beast and how “dreadful and terrible” it is.  It’s great teeth devour and brake to pieces the other countries.  The only description that has a recognizable feature is its 10 horns. Again, the same number of the 10 toes of part iron and part clay of Daniel 2.

fourth beast

The nature of Rome was cruel.  They perfected the tortuous death of crucifixion believed to have been invented by the Persians.  Death by crucifixion could last up to 6 days!  It was on a cruel Roman cross that Jesus took the shamefulness of our sins upon himself.  This act by the Creator was the ultimate demonstration of the sacrificial love for His creation.  It was part of the good news.  But, the fact that Jesus arose a victor over the death of the cross is part of the good news message.  The other part is that Jesus was resurrected and will one day return to change our mortal bodies into immortal bodies and to rescue us forever from the pull and presence of sin (1 Corinthians 15).  The good news cannot be captured by a list of events in the life of Jesus.   it is an experience initiated and propelled by the Lord and the work of the Holy Spirit.

We will end Part 1 with a description by Daniel of the 10 horns and the little horn that arose:

And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows.

Daniel 7:20

Who was this final power that captured the attention of Daniel?  This horn had eyes and a mouth that spoke great things and was more stout than the others.

This horn displaces three horns and speaks great things.  This power exists today! It will bring the final deception of many people on this earth.  In the next post we will discover the identity of the little horn and how it is described in Revelation 13 as the Beast that the “whole world wonders after.”

Despite the little horn’s power, we can trust in the One who is greater.  Terrible times will come, but we can find peace in our Lord both day and night.

“By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me— a prayer to the God of my life.”

Psalm 42:8

Daniel 3-A Message of Warning and Hope for our Time

All these things happened to them as examples for others, and they were written down as a warning for us, for we live at a time when the end is about to come.

1 Corinthians 10:11

This verse has never been more true than now.  As we study prophecies for our time, it is more than just beasts and symbols.  Some things happened to God’s people that were written down as warnings for us because “we live at a time when the end is about to come.” This is why I must talk about the events of Daniel 3 before we get into the heavy symbols of beasts and future powers.

As shown (from Scripture) in other blogs from this site, the end occurs when Jesus returns.  There is no second chance with a seven-year tribulation.  That time period and the events of the second coming have been misinterpreted. See: Part 3-Second Coming Predictions (7 years of Tribulation?).

There are two types of people when Jesus comes:  Those caught unaware and not watching and those aware and looking:

To the unaware, the Lord comes like “a thief in the night.” They are not looking for Him and don’t expect Him.  To them, everything continues day in and day out as it has since the beginning of time.

There is no need to write you, friends, about the times and occasions when these things will happen. For you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come as a thief comes at night. When people say, “Everything is quiet and safe,” then suddenly destruction will hit them! It will come as suddenly as the pains that come upon a woman in labor, and people will not escape. But you, friends, are not in the darkness, and the Day should not take you by surprise like a thiefAll of you are people who belong to the light, who belong to the day.

1 Thessalonians 5: 1-5

Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

2 Peter 3:4

It is not so much about the return of Jesus as it is being prepared and aware. Those who trust in Jesus and have a personal relationship with Him are not caught unaware.  He will not come as “a thief in the night.”  This is shown in their exclamation when he finally does come:

And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God;we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the Lordwe have waited for himwe will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

Isaiah 25:9

This story found in Daniel 3 gives us warnings, but most of all, it gives us hope in the One who will ultimately save us from the presence and power of sin.  If we read a few verses beyond the warning of 2 Peter 3:5 (shown above), we can understand why the Day of The Lord is postponed.  It is God’s great love and mercy that causes him to tarry.

The Lord is not slow to do what he has promised, as some think. Instead, he is patient with you because he does not want anyone to be destroyed but desires all to turn away from their sins.

2 Peter 3:9

If you read all of 2 Peter, you will see that the above verse is in the context of the second coming.  He promises to return, and He mercifully waits because when He comes, it is over.  There is no seven-year second chance as the enemy and Hollywood would have us believe.

The events of ages past, including Daniel 3, were written down to give us hope during our lowest moments and through the fires of our trials. During this time come the words, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” May we all seek and grip tightly the hope offered us as we read this part of scripture about three young men who made a decision to follow the true God even if it meant giving up their lives.

Everything written in the Scriptures was written to teach us to have hope through the patience and encouragement that the Scriptures give us.

Romans 15:4

________________________________________________________________

We can see in chapter 3 King Nebuchadnezzar has changed his tune from  chapter 2 when he proclaimed to Daniel:

“Your God is the greatest of all gods, the Lord over kings, and the one who reveals mysteries. I know this because you have been able to explain this mystery.”

Daniel 2:47

Twenty-three years have passed between the time of the dream of chapter 2 and the events of chapter 3. The king is like many who, after an exciting revealing of God and the passage of time, soon forget and even doubt the sovereignty of the great Creator.  An experience with God is a continual growing journey, not a destination per se. We must learn to “continue” with God every day (excitement and high spiritual experiences, or not)  otherwise, our tune will change too.

The 23 years of being king with no appearance of “an inferior kingdom of silver” has puffed him up, and his dramatic dream is a distant memory.  Because the kingdom of silver has not shown up, the king perhaps doubts the truthfulness of the dream.  Maybe it was all just a bad dream, or Daniel misinterpreted it.

The king’s pride and self-confidence led him to build an idol that was 90 feet tall and made of gold from the top of its head to the bottom of its feet and toes.  There is no succession of metals such as silver, bronze, iron, and miry clay.  There is certainly no reference or symbols to the rock cut out without hands filling the whole earth.

King Nebuchadnezzar then uses all his political power to force people to worship this idol representing Babylon, especially himself.  He now believes his kingdom will never perish. He tries to become a substitute for Christ (the Son of man)…An anti-Christ of sorts.  Anti does not mean “against” or opposing to Christ.  No!  It is something even more severe.  It means “in place of.”  The king is putting himself in place of God.  This has been Satan’s desire from the start. To be a substitute for God, he is willing to work through the sinful and selfish heart of mankind.

“People of all nations, races, and languages! You will hear the sound of the trumpets, followed by the playing of oboes, lyres, zithers, and harps, and then all the other instruments will join in. As soon as the music starts, you are to bow down and worship the gold statue that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.”

Daniel 3: 4-5

The king falls back into his pagan egotistical ways by making the image entire of gold, thereby denying the plan God has set out to have an “inferior” kingdom arise after the fall of Babylon. He then forces the leaders to come to this service to worship him, represented by this statue made entirely of gold.

The king is also proclaiming himself to be God, but the Lord has three men out of the thousands gathered by the king’s order who are faithful to only the true God. Their experience with God is continuous…

Jesus showing up is not a magic formula or saying the right words in prayer but rather the life that continues in Him and expresses faith (trust) daily.

When the king is informed that three men (Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego) are not bowing as he commanded, he is enraged and heats the furnace seven times to burn them alive.  This show of force does not deter the men whose names were changed from Hananiah (God is my Judge), Mishael (Beloved of the Lord), and Azariah (Who is as God?)

They are given a second chance to bow down and worship, but their answer is quick and to the point:

“O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.”

Daniel 3: 16-18

Their response is….our Lord will protect us and if He chooses not to do so, we will still stay true to Him. This is the same mind that Job had when he said,

“Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.”

Job 13:15

This should be our mind, too; when the time comes for a test, a strong test, we will put our lives entirely in the hands of the Lord who walks with us among the flames of trials and temptations. Our afflictions are but light today. Most of us do not live under a threat of death, but that could all change one day. As we will see in the prophecies of Revelation and Babylon described in its chapters, there will be a similar time of being told to worship the Beast under the threat of death.

The furnace is so hot that the men who throw Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego bound by cords into the furnace are killed themselves.

As with the disciples on the road to Emmaus, Jesus shows up as the “other form” in the midst of their affliction at just the right time. Often it is not until we have demonstrated complete faith that He acts on our behalf. Other times, He just shows up when we are discouraged, as he did with the two men on the road to Emmaus.  He knows and understands our weaknesses.

For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust.

Psalm 103: 14

The men come out of the furnace without a trace of the smell of smoke or flame.  The cords that bound them are the only things burned by the fiery ordeal.

As we put our trust in the Lord during the flames, the cords and sin that bind us are consumed like dross from silver revealing freedom and a polished character.

Blessed be the experience, however severe, that gives new value to the stone, enabling it to shine with living brightness!.. From the devotional book, Our Father Cares, p. 282

When the King sees the men in the hot furnace, he asks and exclaims:

“Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?”…Look!…I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”

Daniel 3: 24-25

The king then goes as near as he can get to the furnace and says to them to “come out” and “come here.” The men to come out and the rulers of the land observe that not only was no hair on their head burned, but they don’t even have the smell of fire or smoke on them!

….they saw these men on whose bodies the fire had no power; the hair of their head was not singed nor were their garments affected, and the smell of fire was not on them.

Daniel 3: 27

To come out of an intense ordeal or experience is a powerful testimony for the Kingdom of God.  Our experience with God is not just about our salvation from the flames, but for those who watch and see the protection and grace of our Lord.  Our trials are opportunities to seek God’s will and witness for His kingdom to reach the hard heart of unbelievers.

This experience teaches the King something about the true God.  He praises God and says,

“Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, who sent His Angel and delivered His servants who trusted in Him, and they have frustrated the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they should not serve nor worship any god except their own God!”

Daniel 3:28

The story ends with the promotion of the three men.  But also the king’s proclamation that is not in character with God.  The king still has much to learn about the character of God.  In the next chapter, we see that he again slips back after this powerful experience.

I make a decree that any people, nation, or language which speaks anything amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made an ash heap; because there is no other God who can deliver like this.”

Daniel 3:29

King Nebuchadnezzar makes a decree that forces others to worship the true God under the penalty of death. While that day’s experience is a victorious turn of events and the king wants to recognize the great Deliverer, it is not a good decree. God does not force people to accept Him. Instead, He draws people by His character and His love as demonstrated on the cross:

“Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore, with lovingkindness, I have drawn you.”

Jeremiah 31:3

And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

John 12:32

A better response from the king would be to honor God instead of forcing people under the threat of death. Thus it will be in the last day when the great image of the beast is erected for all to fall down and worship or be under a penalty of economic sanction and even death.

In Chapter 3 of Daniel, this story is a warning about another Babylon found in Revelation.  God will encourage people to come out of her.  The Beast of Revelation 13 will use the same force to make people worship another image. But those who know God and the light of His word will be like the three men who said,

“we are not careful to answer thee in this matter.

If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.

But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

Daniel 3: 17:18

Our Lord will walk with us during times of trouble.

But the salvation of the righteous is of the Lord: he is their strength in the time of trouble.

Psalm 37: 39

He has said,

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Hebrews 13:5

May we continue in God as we consider His warnings found in His word and trust in His promises.

As we get into the heavy symbols of end-time events, remember that regardless of how you might feel about them, it is essential that you know the Lord, for there is salvation in no other name.  Knowing Him will keep us all safe from the treacherous events already arising on this earth.

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Isaiah 41:10

Jesus’ Prayer for Unity-Was it Answered?

While I am working on the series titled Prophecies for Our Time, I thought I would share with you the  material for my sermon this weekend.

While I am not a pastor, I have been a Bible Student for 39 years and I get opportunities from time to time to share what I have learned on my Jesus Journey.  I think you will find this topic interesting.

______________________________________________________________

I love the 17th Chapter of John.  It is truly the Lord’s payer.  In this chapter we are allowed to sit close to Jesus and hear His words as he makes requests from our Father concerning himself, his disciples, and finally believers who will believe the testimony of the disciples throughout the ages to come.  Let’s read this part of John 17:

I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word;  that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.

John 17:21-23

Jesus is praying first of all for the disciples, but also those who would believe their eye witness account of Jesus short teaching time (3 1/2 years)

The new testament tells us about the eye witness account of the disciples and their Jesus journey, but we also know that Jesus is found in the Old Testament as well:

And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself

Luke 24:27

Jesus gave a long Bible study to disappointed disciples the day after His crucifixion as they walked to Emmaus sad and dejected.  For His Bible study, Jesus used what we call the Old Testament.  The topic? Jesus!

A disciple named Philip once helped an Ethiopian understand about Jesus by teaching him Scripture.  What scripture?

Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him.

Acts 8:35

What was the Scripture?  Was it the New Testament?  No! What we call as the New Testament had not been assembled and parts of it had not been written.  The scripture about Jesus came from the Old Testament! Philip explained to the Ethiopian this passage:

“He was led as a sheep to the slaughter;
And as a lamb before its shearer is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.
In His humiliation His justice was taken away,
And who will declare His generation?
For His life is taken from the earth.

Isaiah 53: 7,8

Because of this, we should not be shy about learning from the Old Testament.  To neglect the teachings of the Old Testament is to be only partly equipped for your Jesus Journey.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

2 Timothy 3:16

This passage was not about the New Testament.  It was not finished and assembled. It meant the scripture we call the Old Testament.  But, it certainly refers to the New Testament that we have now.

So Jesus’ prayer is for believers like you and me who believe in God’s word.  What was his prayer for the disciples and us who believe in God’s word?

that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me

John 17 21

Jesus is praying for us to be one, but it is one in Jesus as he is one with the Father.  The purpose of this is for evangelism.  To help non-believers, believe.

And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.

John 17: 22

Notice that he has given the disciples glory that came from the Father through Jesus.  This glory is so that we may be one just as Jesus and the Father are one!  That is powerful and this is all so people will know about the love of God the Father and Jesus!  Here is how I see the unity Jesus desires in His prayer:

Let’s fast forward to 2014.

The Christian church is the largest of all religions, but it is divided into two major sections: Catholic and Protestant. Both are split into some 30,000 different denominations.

Lately, it has been suggested by the Pope and Tony Palmer (now deceased) that the divisions within the Christian church happened when the Protestants “protested” and broke away from the Catholic church.

Martin Luther a priest of the Catholic church found a Bible chained to a monastery wall written in Latin. As he read, he discovered the theme of righteousness by faith.  The church was promoting salvation by works.

As Martin Luther read the Bible and compared it with the Roman Catholics’ teaching, he developed 95 thesis that he was prepared to defend.  In 1517, he took this document and nailed it to the door of the Wittenberg church.  The document started off with these words:

Out of love for the truth and from desire to elucidate (make it clear, explain it), the Reverend Father Martin Luther, Master of Arts and Sacred Theology, and ordinary lecturer therein at Wittenberg, intends to defend the following statements and to dispute on them in that place. Therefore he asks that those who cannot be present and dispute with him orally shall do so in their absence by letter. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.

The Reverend Father Martin Luther saw a conflict between the practices of the church and the words of the disciples and the words of the prophets.

He was ready to defend the truth either orally in person or by letter!

Tony Palmer made a statement in front of a large congregation of Protestants that Luther’s protest was over…finished… because the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran Church had signed an agreement about the theme of righteousness by faith.

But there we 94 more disagreements and many more men involved in the Protestant Reformation. Men such as John Calvin, John Wycliffe, Jon Huss, Peter Waldo and many others.  Many were burn at the stake for not giving alliance to the Roman Catholic church during what we call as the dark ages.

Tony proclaimed that the children should come home to the church at Rome.

So there is a big move toward unity between the Catholic church and many of the protestant churches as I write this.  What is the basis for this unity?  Tony said that it is the Spirit that we can work out all our difference on doctrine when we are upstairs.  That seems to be saying that the teachings of Jesus are not as important as unity.  His teaching and the teaching of all the prophets are doctrine are they not?

Below we will see that true or doctrine cannot be compromised.  Why because doctrine is the revealed will of God.  It is teachings of Christ and of God.  Can we compromise any truth?  Which ones do we throw out for the sake of unity?

___________________________________________________________

Divisions within the church started long before the 16th century

Let’s look at a few instances from the Bible:

Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgmentFor it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are contentions among you. Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.”  Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

1 Corinthians 1:10-13

Many of the believers were lining up behind men and their teachings that they liked.  It was like a popularity contest.  Does this sound familiar?  Paul was pleading that they all come together and speak the same thing and that there are no divisions!   He wanted them to line up behind Jesus, who is not divided.  Paul placed the importance on Christ and not himself when he asked, “Was Paul crucified for you?” This was about 55 AD!

Making a commitment to Jesus can cause divisions:

“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.  And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.

Matthew 10: 34-39

No doubt we are to love and care for our family, but making Jesus #1 in your life can be tested if you have to choose family  over  following Jesus.  We often hear people say that their priorities in life are:

God then family then job.

This is sometimes tested.

Paul knew that when he left a town that he had evangelized that men would come in and draw them away from the simple teachings of the gospel and Jesus:

For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.

“So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.

Acts 20:29-32

What protects the new believer from these wolves?  The new believer is like a small seedling just starting to sprout.  It must be feed, watered and pampered until it is rooted and grounded.  Let us never forget this.

Also, grumblers and complainers in the church can cause divisions:

These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain advantage. But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ:how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts.  These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.

Jude 1: 16-19

Notice the type of person they are:  sensual who cause divisions and they don’t have the Spirit of God in them.  They will use flattery to gain advantage.  With their mouth, they will use “swelling words” to influence.

How often do people decide truth by the appearance of the person rather than by comparing their teaching with the word of God.  During Paul’s time, there was a people who were very careful to compare Paul’s teaching with the word of God.  We must be like them!

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Acts 17:11

Notice they were excited about receiving the words of Paul, but they searched the scriptures every day to see if Paul was telling the truth.  How many people in a church can do this or even want to do it?

The word of God should never be compromised for the sake of unity.  The word is what is a light unto our path.  There is no light in someone who teaches against God’s word:

To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

Isaiah 8:20

______________________________________________________

So the question is did Jesus’ prayer fail?  No!  If you are in Christ.

So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

Romans 12:5

Our unity is found IN Christ. We are members of the same body if we are IN Christ!

Many are at different points in their Jesus Journey, but if we are IN Christ we are IN the father and are one!  Some have much light from God’s word and some have little but we can be one in Christ.

The term “IN CHRIST” appears 76 times in the New Testament. Notice that right after the phrase is the way to be “IN CHRIST”

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 8:1

“Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints.

1 Corinthians 1:2

Church is not a membership, it is a calling! We are sanctified IN Christ and called to do His will!

“I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called”

Ephesians 4:1

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling;

Ephesians 4:4

What is this calling?

It is to follow in his steps to live a life IN Christ following His example.

For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:

1 Peter 2:21

Here is how to be IN Christ:

Unity in Christ

Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. For

“He who would love life
And see good days,
Let him refrain his tongue from evil,
And his lips from speaking deceit.
Let him turn away from evil and do good;
Let him seek peace and pursue it.
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
And His ears are open to their prayers

1 Peter 3: 8-12

By doing these things, you are doing the things you were called to do!

_______________________________________________________________

So we are brought into unity as individuals who are IN Christ.  When we believe and follow His words as given by his disciples (eye witnesses) and the prophets who were carried away in vision we become one.

We might be different by sex, nationality, race but if we are In Christ we are one:

For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ JesusThere is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.  And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Galatians 3:26, 28

A Dungeon and A Rope

(Sermon to be presented on June 14th 2014)

“For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.

Romans 15:4

There are three things that jump out in the verse.  When God inspired the prophets to write, God’s purpose was to do three things:

1.) Teach us

2.) Comfort us

3.) Give us a basis for hope

They are all linked together and occur in this order.

The three F’s of the Christian experience are similar in that they should occur in order,

1.) Fact (God’s word),

2.) Faith (Faith comes by hearing God’s word) and

3.) Feeling (Joy and hope from the faith obtained in God’s word and experience)

As a famous preacher once said,

Much time with the Word of God, much faith.  Little time with God’s Word, little faith.

_______________________________________________________

It is in the teaching from the stories and words of the Bible that give us what we need to endure a wicked and deadly world.  There is no other place where hope and joy are so solid; so true; and so real.

As we read and understand from the Scripture this morning, may our hope be renewed.  If there is someone listening who has lost hope, joy,  or both are fading…may you find it again this morning through our time in Scripture.  This is my prayer.

Above everything, our hope is in Jesus to which the word of God testifies.  Wouldn’t you agree? We sing the song “…our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus Christ and His righteousness.”  Have you put your hope in the Jesus as revealed in God’s word or is your hope in the grit and determination of your own works?  Perhaps it is money where your hope resides.

_______________________________________________________________

When Jesus suddenly appeared to the two highly discouraged disciples walking the 8 miles to Emmaus, He gave them a Bible Study that taught them, from the Scriptures, about Himself.

This story tells us that Jesus can be found all through the scripture, but a person must desire to see him.  For God said.

“And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”

Jeremiah 29:13

If we fail to see Jesus, we will  be…

“Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

2 Timothy 3:7

The seeking and searching cannot be casual and it must be open to the leading of God’s Spirit.

This verse regarding seeking and searching is in Jeremiah where we will be spending our time.   We will be looking to primarily at chapter 38.

The result of Jesus’ 3 hour Bible Study to the two discouraged hopeless men was dramatic.  It was life changing.  They learned so much they didn’t know or had failed to see.  They made a journey that started with hopelessness, but ended with overwhelming hope and joy! It started with teaching (From Jesus), Comfort (knowledge), and Hope/Joy (Jesus is alive!)

Luke tells us the story and describes the results which was this,

“Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?”

Luke 24: 32

Here is what makes our hearts burn within us:  Opening up he scriptures and Jesus talking to us about himself from its pages.  Friends, you do this every morning, make it your first work and you will begin to find peace, hope, and joy.

As we read this small portion of scripture this morning.  Look for Jesus.  If you see Him in it, open your mind and apply the message to you as an individual, not as a church member, not as the group called Christian, but as one who desires to have hope burn within you. Because most of the time you are away from this congregation of believers and your true heart will be revealed.  It is here where your experience becomes real or pretend.

_____________________________________________________________

I want to talk with you this morning about a little known character, a little known story found in the big book of Jeremiah (Chapter 38).  In this story are the  elements of faith that apply to us as individuals who make up the world-wide church as we wait for the soon return of Jesus.

Let’s begin by understanding the setting for our little known hero.

Jeremiah was a true prophet who was warning the people of God that the King of Babylon was going to burn down Jerusalem.  He particularly warned the leadership including the very last King of Judah, King Zedekiah.

It is during this time just before the fall of Jerusalem that our hero shows up.  Many of God’s people could have been saved had the leadership heeded the warning and advice of Jeremiah.  Here is our first lesson.  If we are put in positions of leadership, we will have a great responsibility to hear and respond to the word of God for the good of those we serve.  Wouldn’t you agree?  But that does not excuse us as individual followers of Jesus.

Long before we get to Chapter 38, Jeremiah had given the solution to their fate…a way of escape:

“Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the Lord our God. Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the Lord our God is the salvation of Israel.”

Jeremiah 3:  22, 23

The condition of God’s people (including the king and his officials) was that they had left God.  They were practicing the same vain worship as the heathen.  The built alters and groves and worshiped things made with their own hands. They even sacrificed their sons by fire. They had become superstitious and looked to the hills and mountains where their idols resided to protect them and give them hope.  Their hope was sadly misplaced.

 “Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents;

They have built also the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings unto Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind.”

Jeremiah 19: 4, 5

God’s people were no different from those around them.  They wanted to be accepted by the vast number of the majority.  They wanted to be cool like everyone else.  They desired not to follow God which would make them different, but rather adopt the ways of the majority so they would fit in. So they sold their God-given birth right for a bowl of soup.

But, despite their backsliding, God bore long with them and extended mercy after mercy through the messages of Jeremiah.  Finally, the city was doomed and its fate was sealed. But, even then, God made a way of escape for those who chose to listen to God as individuals.

“And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.

He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth out, and falleth to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey.

For I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good, saith the Lord: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.”

Jeremiah 21: 8-10

Does this not sound like Jesus when he warned the disciples of the coming destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD?

Jesus desired Jerusalem to come to him, but they would not.

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!”

Matthew 23:37

But Jesus made a way of escape for those who would listen:

“Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place’ (whoever reads, let him understand), ‘then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. ‘ “

Matthew 24: 15-18

In 70 AD Jerusalem was besieged and destroyed by the Roman army, but those who remembered the words of Jesus escaped unharmed.

Josephus claims that 1.1 million people were killed during the siege, of which a majority were Jewish, and that 97,000 were captured and enslaved….

“The slaughter within was even more dreadful than the spectacle from without. Men and women, old and young, insurgents and priests, those who fought and those who entreated mercy, were hewn down in indiscriminate carnage. The number of the slain exceeded that of the slayers. The legionaries had to clamber over heaps of dead to carry on the work of extermination.”

Those who heeded the words of Jesus to leave Jerusalem were spared the pain of suffering of a besieged city.

Throughout scripture it is the majority in the cities that are destroyed while those few faithful to the Lord escape and come out before the destruction.  We have examples of Sodom, Gomorrah,  Jerusalem, and in the end time, it will be Babylon symbolic of those who follow tradition and the majority above the word of God.  We are only safe as individuals and not as a group.

____________________________________________

King Zedekiah and the leaders did not want to believe Jeremiah’s hard prophecies.  They desired a more peaceful ending…a more palatable story…One of their own liking.   The story could have had a happy ending IF they listened and did what Jeremiah instructed as told to him by a Sovereign God.  He would have fought for them Himself!

But,  only Jeremiah and a remnant found hope in the words of God, the Scripture.  It gave them comfort in a time of extreme difficulty:

“Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.”

Jeremiah 15:16

The solution to hopelessness and discouragement is found in the words of the Bible, the scripture.  Also, if you are called by God’s name (Recognized by others as a true follower) you will have joy even when it seems the world is against you. But how often are we afraid to let the world know of our name of how we are identified?  Do we want to be like those around us who have no hope?

To minimize the message of Jeremiah, there arose false prophets who told the king and the leadership the things they wanted to hear.  It gave them comfort, but it was a lie and made Jeremiah’s message hard to hear.  These false prophets said, “everything is going to be OK.”  Listen to one of them.  His name was Hananiah:

“Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.

Within two full years will I bring again into this place all the vessels of the Lord‘s house, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place, and carried them to Babylon:

And I will bring again to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, with all the captives of Judah, that went into Babylon, saith the Lord: for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.”

Jeremiah 28: 2-4

Jeremiah called out Hananiah on this:

“Then said the prophet Jeremiah unto Hananiah the prophet, Hear now, Hananiah; The Lord hath not sent thee; but thou makest this people to trust in a lie.

Therefore thus saith the Lord; Behold, I will cast thee from off the face of the earth: this year thou shalt die, because thou hast taught rebellion against the Lord.

So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.”

Jeremiah 28:15-17

Folks it matters what we believe.  Sometimes the message will be hard to hear or we may be the only one among thousands who are proclaiming it or following it. Be careful of messages that give false hope that leads to false comfort.  Truth is always best. Beware of smooth talk, fancy suits, wealthy speakers, and those who would flatter you.  Do not be naive, but one who is led by the Lord and His words.

“For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.”

Romans 16:18

__________________________________________________________

It was because of Jeremiah’s hard prophecy and people’s refusal to hear it that the leadership of Judah, including the king. throw Jeremiah into a dungeon.  Here was the final message that finally put him in a dungeon:

“Thus says the Lord: ‘He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he who goes over to the Chaldeans shall live; his life shall be as a prize to him, and he shall live.’Thus says the Lord: ‘This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which shall take it.’”

Jeremiah 38: 2-3

In effect, Jeremiah is telling the people to defect, to get out of the city.  If they do, they will live.  This was the same message Jesus gave to a Jerusalem some 500 years later.

There comes a time when the bad will begin to happen.  If you have your hope in God, he will give you joy a peace during that time and your life shall be as a prize. Again, I repeat Jeremiah:

“Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.”

Jeremiah 15:16

Because of Jeremiah’s hard message, he is let down into a Dungeon that is filled with disgusting smelly mud.

“…and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire. So Jeremiah sank in the mire.”

Jeremiah 38: 6

This dungeon was more like a deep dark confining latrine of a pit that only had enough water to make mud at the bottom.  It is likely Jeremiah had no room to lie down and even if he did, it would be in the disgusting mud.

A brother of mine, described his experience with this type of dungeon:

“Growing up in rural Kenya, I have had the ‘privilege’ of going down into a pit when I was about 10 years old, albeit not a muddy one the way Jeremiah did. Having been forewarned and prepared, the instructions were clear: Don’t look up – you just go in and continue digging to extend its depth. You can guess what happened – on being lowered to the floor of the new pit latrine we had been tasked as boys in the family to dig, I made the fatal mistake of looking up! It is freaking scary – the opening looks like a pin hole, and the walls look like they are carving in on you! I screamed, and had to be pulled off as soon as possible, as my elder siblings took over the task! I have not had to get into the pit again ever since but it is not a pleasant place to be in.”

How bad were the conditions for the man of God who prophesied the truth and not smooth words in order to be accepted!  Folks, sometimes, we are in this pit and we wonder why God is letting this happen.

Jeremiah was what the people of God should be…telling the truth regardless of how unpopular it would make him.  The message is one meant to save them from death and destruction.  One that was uttered with pathos.  But Jeremiah was comforted by the words of God.  If we do the same it will be our joy and being called by his name will give us rejoicing and comfort even when in the pit of mud.  We will be called by His name when we honor Him no matter our circumstance.  Disaster, sickness, death all are opportunities to glorify the Lord for the sake of others who have no hope.  After all, our experience with Jesus is not about ourselves, but about others.

Let me say it again, if you have the words of God and a relationship with Jesus it does not matter how bad things are, you have peace!  Do you believe that?  Have you ever experienced what I am talking about?

____________________________________________________________

At the darkest, smelliest, confining moment of Jeremiah’s experience is when our hero shows up!  His name is Ebed-Melech.  He is an Ethiopian; a heathen who is not one of God’s people, but many times it is not God’s people who come to the rescue because their salt has lost is saltiness!

Ebed-Melech is a slave to the King. He is a eunuch.  An eastern eunuch.  This clan had a terrible a reputation. The Eastern eunuchs were a pitilessly cruel race, whose delight was to wound and vex. No clan had a worse reputation for cruelty, but Ebed-melech was different.

Ebed-Melech was as faithful a servant to God as he was to king Zedekiah. He loved the prophet Jeremiah and risked his own life to save the man of God.

_________________________________________________

Ebed-Melech begins his ministry by interceding for Jeremiah.

“When the king was sitting at the Gate of Benjamin, Ebed-Melech went out of the king’s house and spoke to the king, saying: ‘My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon, and he is likely to die from hunger in the place where he is. For there is no more bread in the city.’ ”

Jeremiah 38: 7-9

When Ebed-Melech heard that the man of God was in a deep dungeon, he risked his own life, occupation, reputation by approaching the king and accusing the king’s more honored and sophisticated supporters of being and doing evil.

Here is the first of the Christ-like actions of Ebed-Melech. His life is of little concern.  He has an agape type love that puts the other person’s life ahead of his own.  He approaches the king interceding for Jeremiah, as does Jesus for us.

But, there is a big difference.  Jesus went into the pit (death) for us so that we might not have to.

“Then the king commanded Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian, saying, “Take from here thirty men with you, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon before he dies”

Jeremiah 38: 10

Like Jesus, Ebed-Melech, is given the resources to go and save the man of God from an apparent hopeless situation.

“So Ebed-Melech took the men with him and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took from there old clothes and old rags, and let them down by ropes into the dungeon to Jeremiah. Then Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Please put these old clothes and rags under your armpits, under the ropes.” And Jeremiah did so. So they pulled Jeremiah up with ropes and lifted him out of the dungeon. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.”

Jeremiah 38: 11-12

As we know, these old clothes and rags represent our own righteousness.  It is not our rags that save us, but the one who pulls us up despite the rags to save us.

Here it was an effort of 30 men.  Often when someone needs pulling from the pit of despair, it takes a group effort to bring them up.

Those rags have to be under our armpits….A secure place, otherwise we may slip and fall as we are headed up.

The rags that pulled us up from discouragement, hopelessness, and death were not old dirty rags, but the precious cloth of Jesus’ robe of righteousness.  He purchased these cloths at the cross and it is ours to keep if we are willing and chose to exchange our filthy rages for his soft comforting robe.

This was the experience of the prodigal son who came home dirty, tired, discouraged, and doubting whether his father would take him back, but the father was looking for him and came running to him shouting this command to his servants as he ran:

‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.

Luke 15: 22-24

Are you following the instructions of your savior and in a secure position?  Is it Christ pulling you out of the mud into a firm place?  Are you looking at the tattered rags or upward to the one who has promised to never let you fall.

Is this your experience?

“He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps.”

Psalm 40:2

________________________________________________________________

Although  Ebed-Melech appears for only a short time in Scripture, his actions for the man of God have been preserved for all who read and understand .   Some 2500 years later, I am telling his story and  how he  brings hope to all of us who seem to be looking at the pit we are in rather than trusting in the character of our Lord.

Ebed-Melech’s actions spared the life of a man of God.  What little he knows about the true God, he uses.  He doesn’t wait for any sign or more information.  He is moved by the Spirit of God and acts.

There are many Ebed-Melchs in this world.   They may have  little worldly influence or possessions.  They may be without a family and  less educated.  They may know little about the true God of heaven, but, unlike the religious, they have a heart that can be moved by the great Creator to perform His will and participate in the promotion and preservation of God’s work.  While they are ordinary and often go unnoticed, they do extraordinary things.

Because of Ebed’s actions, his life was spared.   While big things were going on with the nation, God remembers the  man who likely had no family and would never have any descendants.  God remembers the man who was small in influence until the day he stood up for what was right.  God inspired him and he moved into action.

“Now the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah, while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying,

Go and speak to Ebed Melech the Ethiopian, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring my words upon this city for evil, and not for good; and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee.

But I will deliver thee in that day, saith the Lord: and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid.

For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord.”

Jeremiah 39: 15-18

What is your dungeon?  Do you have a Ebed Melech in your life?  Where is your hope?  Is it in the rope of filthy rags, the hills, the money or in the strength of the  one pulling you up?

Would you choose today to let God be the source of your joy, peace, and comfort by surrendering to Him?  You may say, I am too weak and my sins too strong.  I am too depressed.

Does this sound like you?  You hold the one thing God gives you in the plan of salvation-Choice

Choose to surrender and put the rope of God’s word under your arm pits.  Lean back and look up at the light of freedom.  Let the Lord’s strong arm pull you up into the glorious light of His presence.

“The temptations of Satan are grater now than ever before, for he knows that his time is short and that very soon every case will be decided, either for life or for death.  It is no time now to sink down beneath discouragement and trial; we must bear up under all our afflictions and trust wholly in the Almighty God of Jacob.  The Lord has shown me that His grace is sufficient for all our trials; and although they are greater than ever before, yet if we trust wholly in God, we can overcome every temptation and through His grace come off victorious.”

Early Writings-Trial of Our Faith, Chapter 8

Part 5-Second Coming Predictions-The End of Sin

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

2 Peter 3:9

The second coming of Christ means some will perish!  Not live in hell, but perish!

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16

Those who believe have eternal life, those who don’t believe perish!

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:23

What are the wages of sin? Death! The penalty for sin is eternal death (perish)  not eternal life.

Is the end of sin as simple as death or is it eternal life in flames? Which one of these is just and fair?

Is the end of sin and its consequences a place of living torture throughout eternity as described by Bill Wiese in his book 23 Minutes in Hell?

Again, as mentioned in earlier posts, many choose to believe man and his books instead of God and His books.

Is Mr. Wiese’s description really the end of sin?  As long as there is sinful beings being tortured under the earth or in a corner of the universe has sin been eradicated?   Do those being punished have flesh that is constantly burning?  Eyes constantly melting?, Do they breathe oxygen or flames? Do they have a body that does not have one square inch that is free from fire and pain?

Is there a place where people are now suffering unmercifully desiring death and finding no relieve from the intense pain of fire because they must live like this forever?

Does this sound like the  God who so loved the world…..?

Recently, there were a bus filled with students that crashed and burned.  One of the students who survived the wreck, but was drenched in flames ran screaming for help towards another person who saw the wreck. Of course the kind  bystander mercifully put out the flames and injured herself in the process.  If you were that bystander would you have tried to put out the flames?  Most all people (regardless of religion or not) have a heart that does not like to see anyone or any animal suffer, but yet our modern churches have painted God as one who will not put out the flames, but actually perform a miracle moment by moment to keep a person alive so they can suffer because they rejected his son.  This they call justice.

To believe in this kind of  vindictive God, you must skip over some important verses like those described above or re-write them to say,

The wages of sin is eternal life in hell.

Instead He is patient with you not wanting anyone to live in hell.

As we shall see, there is a hell, but it is not what has been taught and preached.  It is God’s merciful way of putting an end to sin and its consequences

Indeed, sin and its consequences has an end!  The scriptures describe it well for all who will listen.

____________________________________________________

The beginning of sin is important.  It helps us  to understand the end of sin and its consequences.

Many are tempted to think sin began with Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, the word of God lets us know it started before!  Before Eve took a bite of the forbidden fruit an enemy of God was at work as demonstrated in the contradictions of Satan disguised as a  strange animal sitting in the tree forbidden by God Himself.

The first parents  were deceived by Satan.  He contradicts God in his conversation with Eve and tells the  very first lie recorded in the Bible.  It has to do with death and being like God.

God told the first pair the penalty for disobedience is death.  Satan says,  No!  there is no death!  In fact, he asserts, God knows their eyes will be opened and they will be as gods!

In many  Christian pulpits we hear the same lie.  You do not die, you will live eternity in one of two places!

After the short discussion with Satan, Adam and Eve used logic that seemed right.  The fruit does looks good for eating and it does have the potential for a better more wise life than the one God had provided.  This nice creature told us! He would not lie to us.

Thus sin, the consequences (unhappiness,  wars, sickness, confusion) and its penalty (death) came into the world.

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men,”

Romans 5:12

The prophets and writers of the Bible are quick to name the serpent as Satan who is given many other symbolic names to identify him and his character.   While the names are symbolic, he is not.  His work can easily be seen and detected in the world  today.  If there is an eternal torture place, Satan is not there.  He is here with us.  Even if this torture chamber started at the end of time, there remains contradictions in the fate of the lost and of Satan.

Who is this Satan anyway?

Ezekiel 28 summaries Satan’s story.  Ezekiel uses the King of Tyrus to paint a picture of Satan.  From this passage, we learn about Satan, sin, and his ultimate fate:

“You were the signet of perfection,
    full of wisdom
    and perfect in beauty.
You were in Eden, the garden of God;
every precious stone was your covering,
carnelian, topaz, and jasper,
    chrysolite, beryl, and onyx,
sapphire, carbuncle, and emerald;
and wrought in gold were your settings
    and your engravings.
On the day that you were created
    they were prepared.
With an anointed guardian cherub I placed you;
    you were on the holy mountain of God;
in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.
You were blameless in your ways
from the day you were created,
till iniquity was found in you.
In the abundance of your trade
    you were filled with violence, and you sinned;
so I cast you as a profane thing from the mountain of God,
and the guardian cherub drove you out
from the midst of the stones of fire.
Your heart was proud because of your beauty;
you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground;
    I exposed you before kings,
to feast their eyes on you. By the multitude of your iniquities,
in the unrighteousness of your trade
    you profaned your sanctuaries;
so I brought forth fire from the midst of you;
    it consumed you,
and I turned you to ashes upon the earth
in the sight of all who saw you.
All who know you among the peoples
    are appalled at you;
you have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more for ever.”

Ezekiel 28: 12-19

From these verses we can see that:

  1. Satan was beautiful and wise
  2. He was in the Garden of Eden
  3. He was created
  4. He was in heaven near God (mountain of God)
  5. He was blameless until iniquity was found in him
  6. His heart became proud because of his beauty and splendor
  7. God casts him from the holy mountain of God
  8. His trade is in iniquity and unrighteousness.  (The opposite of God’s character)
  9. Eventually God will send a fire from the midst of him that will consumer him.
  10. He will come to a dreadful end and will be no more
  11. His fate is ashes

His fate is found in not only death, but ashes and non-existence forever.  His fate is the same fate of those others who chose to believe Satan and chose to  rebel  against God and chose a path of sin and disobedience:

“Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire,” says the Lord Almighty. “Not a root or a branch will be left to them.…”

Malachi 4:1

“Then you will trample on the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty.”

Malachi 4:3

If He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly;

2 Peter 2:6

________________________________________________

Satan’s sin:

How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,  on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;     I will make myself like the Most High.”  But you are brought down to the realm of the dead, to the depths of the pit.

Those who see you stare at you, they ponder your fate: “Is this the man who shook the earth and made kingdoms tremble, the man who made the world a wilderness, who overthrew its cities and would not let his captives go home?”

Isaiah 14: 12-16

From these verses we see:

  1. As in Ezekiel, Lucifer (Satan) is removed from the mountain of God (heaven) and cast down to the earth.
  2. He wants to make himself like the Most High. He desires the worship.  (It is not strange that the battle between truth and error has to do with worship.)
  3. His fate is death.

Before Satan was cast out of heaven, there was a war.  It was unlike any on earth.  The war did not include any physical injuries or death, but a war of allegiance.  Sides were chosen and angles lined up behind Michael (Christ) and Satan.

“And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Revelations 12: 7-9

From these verses we see:

  1. There was a war in heaven between allegiances to Michael and to Satan.
  2. Satan and his angels did not prevail and they were cast out.
  3. Satan and his angels were cast to this earth.

All three passages from Ezekiel, Isaiah, and Revelations describe conflict in heaven and Satan along with his angels being cast out.  They are cast to this earth. The next place we see Satan is in the Garden of Eden conversing with Adam and Eve.

So sin began in the heart of Satan and was transferred to angels and then to God’s creation, Adam and Eve

Mystery of mysteries:  Sin.  To explain it, is to excuse it. All we can see is where and with whom it started.

Mysteries of mysteries:  The love of God to send his only Son to become one of us and to pay the penalty for sin:  eternal death.

Sin is now like a disease, but God sent His son to make a way of escape from sin and its consequences.  It is trusting in the life, death,  and resurrection of his only begotten son Jesus that gives us hope.

We have seen in earlier studies (Parts 1-5) that when Jesus returns there are only  4 types of people who ever lived:

Saved Alive

Saved Dead

Lost Alive

Lost Dead

The Saved Dead and Saved Alive meet the Lord in the air.  From there he takes us back to where He is now. But the Lost Alive are slain by the brightness of the His coming.  For 1,000 years, there is no one on this earth except for Satan and his angels.  There is no one to deceive until the 2nd resurrection that occurs and judgment begins. Please read the earlier studies for detail and the related Bible verses.

At the end of the 1,000 years something very dramatic occurs that puts an end to sin and begins eternity. Let’s read about it as given to us by Peter, Paul, and John:

But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.”

2 Peter 3:7

This earth and ungodly men will end with fire.

And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,  In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

2 Thessalonians 1: 7-9

Notice that the punishment is everlasting destruction, not everlasting life in hell.  The punishment is everlasting in its effect not in its duration.

“And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

Revelations 20: 14-15

Death and hell is cast in the lake of fire.  Death is not a person nor is hell (the grave), so why are these two signified as being thrown into the lake of fire?  Can they be punished?  This lake of fire is the fire that does a work of ending both death and its home (grave).  Anything that would remind us of death is destroyed. Those who are lost are also ended.  They perish as shown in the verses we discussed at the beginning.

This is God’s sorrowful and strange work, but He does not stop there.  He is the Creator.  So He creates! He is a comforter, so he wipes away the tears of those who lost loved one.  This time sin will not raise its head again.  All have experienced the sting of death and sin and who developed a saving relationship with Jesus now understand the danger of rebellion. With this experience and the love of their Creator they still have the freedom to choose, but it now operates on the great principle of love, experience, and understanding.

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

Revelations 21: 1-5

A new earth and new sky free of pollution.  God, Himself, will dwell here with those who made Him their God.  He wipes away the tears.  No one will ever experience the consequences of sin: sickness, sorrow, death.

For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain.

And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord.

Isaiah 66:22-23

It is a glorious thought to think the saved will be able to watch our great Creator God make a new heaven and a new earth!  Perhaps, He will take 6 days like the first time.

Also, it will be a wonderful day each week when all gather to Worship our Creator and Redeemer on the Sabbath–the day God blessed the first time as a tribute to His creation and redemption.  Maybe the Sabbath will then be a celebration of the new heavens and new earth  He spoke into existence as we watched!

During eternity we will ever be learning and building and enjoying the works of our hands:

“And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them. “

Isaiah 65:21-22

And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse….  Revelation 22: 1-3

The great controversy is ended. Sin and sinners are no more. The entire universe is clean. One pulse of harmony and gladness beats through the vast creation. From Him who created all, flow life and light and gladness, throughout the realms of illimitable space. From the minutest atom to the greatest world, all things, animate and inanimate, in their unshadowed beauty and perfect joy, declare that God is love. Great Controversy, p. 678

With our next study, we will examine the  passages used to construct the idea of unending torture.  Until then…Blessings to you and your family.

40 Days-Before Going Home

“…He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.  Acts 1:3

For 40 days after the cross and His resurrection, Jesus  was seen  with “infallible proofs” and spoke about things of the kingdom of God.  The big question on the disciples mind was:

“Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” Verse 6

Jesus answer was blunt:

“It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.” Verse 7

How ever you want to interpret the answer, Jesus made it clear that the timing belonged to the Father only.  Jesus used similar words another time in Matthew 24 about His second coming:

“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.” Matthew 24: 36

But just before verse 36 and after, he Jesus also made it clear that we, as watching Christians,  can know His coming and the end is near even as a person who is at the front door.

“Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors!

Verse 32, 33

Jesus goes on to explain the conditions of the world before the coming of Christ.  His coming will be one of surprise for those who have become a lover of this world.  Many will be going about the everyday events of this earth when Jesus will visibly come back.

“For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark,  and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.” Matthew 24: 38-39

I will come back to verse shortly.  A relevant question concerns what the angels said  about His return in Acts 1?  They said you will see Him, just as they saw Him go:

This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” Verse 11

This begs the question as to why so many people teach that the church is secretly raptured at His coming.  When He comes, as shown in Matthew 24: 39 above, those who were caught by surprise  (eating, drinking, marrying, etc.) are “took away.”  This is not a translation  or a rapture but something different.  Luke describes the same scene, but uses different language for those who are “took away.”

They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.

Those that are “took away” are taken by the destruction that takes place when Jesus returns. Peter described this destruction.  It is by fire:

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.

1 Peter 3:10

The second coming is loud and destructive, not silent.  The reference to the “thief in the night” can’t be related to something secret since His coming is visible and with much fire.  A thief catches its victim by surprise and takes their belongings.  They don’t expect it.

Paul and Matthew encourages us to watch for  the “thief” so we won’t be surprised.

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 1 Thessalonians 5:4

But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Matthew 24: 43

Let go back to the scene in Acts 1 as Jesus was ascending to heaven.

Where was He during this time of 40 days?  It must of been of such little consequence that Luke made no reference to His whereabouts.  But, one thing is clear.  After the 40 days, he ascended to His Father as described six verses later by Luke:

Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel,  who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” Acts 1: 9-11

And where did Jesus Go?

After the crucifixion and His resurrection, Jesus stayed on this earth for 40 more days.   There is a seeming odd statement by Jesus to Mary when she went to the tomb and did not find Him in it.  She then asked someone she thought to be a gardener about the body of Jesus, but it was Jesus.  Then Jesus said something that lets us know that He had not yet been to Paradise where Heaven and the Father are  located:

Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.  John 20:17 KJV

Jesus clearly states He has not yet ascended to the Father, at least not up until that point.  Many think that Jesus went to Paradise the day He died on the cross because he said to the repentant thief:

“And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

Luke 23:43

There are also many that think that Jesus went to hell during his death and resurrection, but there is no evidence in the Bible of any such think happening.  Also, what would be the purpose?

He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living…”  Mark 12:27

But if Jesus had not gone to Paradise, where God the Father and all the holy angels are located, then is there a contradiction?  The answer is simple.  The original language of the Bible did not contain punctuation.  When the translators were translating it into English, the comma was placed at the wrong place in the sentence without considering the verse in Luke and other passages that let us know he did not go to paradise until He ascended to God after about 40 days.   With the comma in the right place, it brings harmony to the other verses in the Bible:

“And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you today, (comma is at the right location here)  you will (future tense) be with Me in Paradise.”

Luke 23:43

With the comma in the right location,  it states that Jesus is promising him today while everything looks hopeless that he will be with Him in paradise. Jesus did not go to paradise that day.  The  answer Jesus gave the thief is in context of the desire of the thief when he said to remember him when he comes into His kingdom.

“Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”

Luke 23:42

When does Jesus come into his Kingdom?

When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.”

 Mathew 25: 31-34

Even as the death dew was upon the brow of Jesus, He was in His Father’s will of bringing compassion and salvation to any who responded to the tug of the Holy Spirit and the words of Jesus.  The thief had likely heard Jesus talk about the Kingdom of Heaven or Kingdom of God and desired to be part of it.  *Jesus talked more about the Kingdom of Heaven or God than He did about hell, so likely the thief was familiar with Jesus teaching on the kingdom.

*Note:  for more study, go to this link, Did Jesus Teach More about Hell than Heaven

In this account of Mary weeping at the empty tomb of Jesus demonstrates how hopeless the disciples of Christ felt.  She is so immersed in the pain of losing Jesus that she is unable to immediately recognize that Jesus is there with her.  It is not until he says her name, “Mary” that she realizes that her grieve and sorrow have turned into inexpressible joy.

The same occurred when the two disciples on the road to Emmaus.  They were so discouraged and were in a frame of mind that to believe He was resurrected.  They could not believe that the resurrection of Jesus was possible.

In a favorite book, called, Desire of Ages, the author puts it this way:

“…the disciples thought upon His empty tomb, and mourned and wept. The day that was a day of rejoicing to all heaven was to the disciples a day of uncertainty, confusion, and perplexity. Their unbelief in the testimony of the women gives evidence of how low their faith had sunk. The news of Christ’s resurrection was so different from what they had anticipated that they could not believe it. It was too good to be true, they thought. They had heard so much of the doctrines and the so-called scientific theories of the Sadducees that the impression made on their minds in regard to the resurrection was vague. They scarcely knew what the resurrection from the dead could mean. They were unable to take in the great subject.” p. 792, 793

There is a lesson here for us.  There will be times when we have heard what the Word has to say, but we are so despondent that we cannot believe.  But, God in his mercy and love for us, will appear in the darkest part of our time and gently say our name.  Then we will turn and our grief will be turned to joy.  Then we will remember the words of encouragement that were spoke to us before our time of trouble came.

We  will be on our journey away from the discouragement of Jerusalem and the crucifixion on a dusty road about to give up all hope, when Jesus will suddenly appear and teach us things we did not know.   Our hearts will burn within us as we listen and understand.  Faith will begin to grow, but we won’t know it is Jesus talking to us until we least expect it.  That is how Jesus works sometimes.  He just shows up!  We didn’t pray for Him to do that.  He just shows up!  We weren’t looking for Him, but He just shows up!  Why?  Because God loves and cares for those who are downcast and hurting.  This is the type of God we serve!

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

Isaiah 41:10

The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.

Jeremiah 31:3

There is a verse in the New Testament that is hardly ever mentioned.  I have never heard a sermon on it,  but it is an impressive event that fits well with the train of thought here concerning the activities of Jesus during the 40 days on earth before he returns to His Father.

And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,  And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

Matthew 27: 52, 53

When Jesus raised the son of the widow of Nain, the rulers’ daughter, and Lazarus, they were not clothed with immortality. They must have died again  in the future after growing old to wait for the great resurrection morning.  This is only speculation on my part.  But, those that were resurrected on that Sunday morning with Jesus were the “first fruits” of the resurrection.  They were the trophies of His victory over death. They represented the sacred truth of the resurrection and the hope for all those putting their trust in Jesus to resurrect them one day.

There is no record of Lazarus talking about being pulled out of heaven to return to the earth.  No, they slept in the dust and waited for the day when Jesus would have victory over death and be resurrected and clothed with immortality.  Of them it was prophesied:

“Thy dead men shall live, together with My dead body shall they arise…”  Isaiah 26:19

The verse continues…

“…Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.”

Isaiah 26:19 (last part)

Christ and these risen saints became the first fruits of those who sleep in the dust waiting for the resurrection,  But it was Jesus that was the real first fruit of being raised and then going up to paradise.

“But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the first fruits of them that slept.”

1 Corinthians 15:20

Jesus’ favorite term for describing those who die is sleep.  So were the other writers such as Paul and Job.   Not once does Jesus or the disciples say what we say at funerals such as:

“Well, they are in heaven with their beloved spouse.”

“He  went to be with Jesus.”

“She is up there enjoying the fruits of heaven.”

“God must have wanted him more than we do, so He took him.”

If a person wants to be comforted by words from the Bible about the passing of a loved one, here are a couple of them from Paul who seemed to understand this topic better than anyone other than Jesus:

This verse ends with the words, “Comfort one another with these words.”  What words?  Here they are:

For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.

1 Thessalonians 4: 16-18

The words we are to comforted one another is the second coming of Jesus and the fact that those who died “in Christ.” will be resurrected.  They will rise from dusty graves and meet those who are left from the destructive events of Jesus’ coming.  We will meet the Lord in the air at the same time!  No one is there already.  We go at the same time!  What a comfort to know our loved ones are not looking down on us!  They have a brief sleep of death and then rise when Jesus resurrects them!

The resurrection is so important that Paul states the following:

For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.  If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.

1 Corinthians 15: 16-19

Our hope is in the return of Christ!  In fact, belief and trust in the resurrection of Christ is what saves us as much as believing He died for our sins.

if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Romans 10:9

Like the thief on the cross, I want to pray that Jesus will remember me when He comes again.  Don’t you?  For forty-days, Jesus was encouraging His followers and reminding them that they must go away, but that He would return to take us where He is now.  In Paradise!

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

John 14: 1-3

His promise here gives me comfort knowing He has promised to return,  give me immortality and take me to paradise.    Doesn’t it you?  Paul tells us that we will be changed in a twinkling of an eye at the last trumpet.  This is when we become immortal.  Until then we are mortal.  I pray you will receive you comfort in Jesus and the resurrection:

We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortalitySo when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality ,then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”

1 Corinthians 15: 51-54

The Day Jesus Gave a Bible Study

A Jesus Journey

If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. John 5:46

He gave sermons, taught parables, and read passages in the synagogue, but there is only one time recorded where Jesus gave a Bible study to prove who He is; why He must die on a cross; and that He would be resurrected the third day.  Because of the amount of  scripture He covered, we have no way of knowing what else  he discussed, but this we know for sure, it was all about Him!  What a powerful study that must have been!

At first, the study was given to only two disciples, but later that day, Jesus repeated it to all His disciples except Thomas.  Thomas would meet the live Jesus  8 days later.

This story is found in Luke 24: 13-45 and  is the basis for the following first person account.

________________________________________________

It was early afternoon, the sun was high in the sky as I walked the dusty road speaking in low tones with my friend Cleopas about the things that had transpired over the last few days.  So many things!  All very bad!

It started with the arrest of Jesus in the Garden east of the city.   During the night and into the early morning of the Preparation Day (Friday) the soldiers and mob began to move Him between the governor and religious leadership. Then they beat Him to a pulp and eventually crucified Him on a Roman cross on the hill outside of Jerusalem later in the afternoon of the Preparation Day.  I watched from afar as He hung His head and took his last breath.  He said something at the end, but I was unable to hear because I was trying to stay far enough away so that no one would try to connect me with Him .  I would certainly be labeled as a fanatic believer in this prophet who the clergy labeled as a blasphemer.  I think I saw Peter off in the distance.  He appeared to be on his knees with his face in his hands.  His disappointment must be very great!

There had been an earthquake and the sun refused to shine.  Darkness took over the land like a thick smothering blanket.  Everything seemed out of place…frightening.  The large curtain in the temple had been ripped from top to bottom by some unseen hand. There were even reports of  people, considered saints,  coming out of their graves and appearing to many in the city! (See Matthew 27: 51-53)

My personal disappointment was great, because I believed everything He said and was amazed at His great miracles and works of kindness. His followers thought Him to be the Messiah prophesied by many of the prophets hundreds of years ago.  He was going to set up His kingdom and deliver our people from the iron rule of Rome.

He was the coming king upon which I hung all our hopes.   But, it seemed like He did not want to be king.  I had left everything to follow Him and learn His teachings, but all this seemed to come to nothing on that Friday afternoon when He died.  Now only doubt, sadness, and disappointment hung on Cleopas and me like a heavy smelly cloak belonging to someone else.  I  want explanation, but the reality of deception was creeping into my thoughts and it made me feel sick and foolish.

On top of everything else, the body of Jesus is missing!  The women said He was alive, confirmed by a couple of other disciples, but I know better.  It is just wishful thinking on their part. No one could have survived the beating, the nails, the loss of blood, and finally the sharp sword in the side.  I saw it and refuse to believe anything but what my eyes can confirm. There was no mistaking… the vision of so much blood and the pale appearance of death was real.

We are on our way to Emmaus to start over;  a walk of about 7 miles. It will take me the usual 2 1/2 hours or so to walk…maybe longer today because of our conversation and heavy heart. This will give us plenty of time to try and put all the pieces together….to try to understand and make sense of everything and to decide what to do with the rest of our lives.

All of a sudden and unexpected, a stranger walks up from behind and joins us.  He asks,

Why are you so sad and what are you discussing?”

I find these two questions odd in the light of the excitement and well-known events of the weekend. Slightly agitated and amazed Cleopas speaks before I can open my mouth and he answers the question with a question.  He throws in some sarcasm  for good measure.

Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem that does not know the things which happened there this last few days?”

I am even more amazed when the stranger asks,

What things?”

In disbelief, we began to explain to the stranger the events of the weekend.  Reviewing everything does not help my disappointment and we rush through them as a courtesy to the stranger.

About Jesus of Nazareth,” we replied in unison! “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.  The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.  In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning  but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”

Then the stranger calls Cleopas and me “foolish ones” and that we are “slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken”  This is certainly not so! I have always believed the prophets.  I have come from a family who believes in the Tanakh (Old Testament) and I have read it often.  The prophets said, that the Messiah would come and deliver Israel from its enemies.  But the stranger began to recite the writings of Moses (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy) and all the Prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Micah, Malachi, etc)  of the Tanakh and explain things I had missed before.

The stranger clearly points out passages that were references to Jesus.  For the next 3 hours, I am amazed at the knowledge and clarity of the stranger’s words.  As I listened to the stranger recite our ancient books, I begin to see that it was necessary for Jesus to die for the sins of the world, but that He would be raised up the third day!  How had I missed that?  Why had we not believed Jesus when He said it was necessary for Him to die and that he would rise again?  It was like I had been reading the scripture the way I wanted it to read instead of letting it talk to me!  Indeed, we felt foolish, but encouraged by the words of the stranger.  My heart burned within me!  I wanted to hear more!  This was all exciting and new to me!

As we get near the village where we are going it is almost dark. I don’t want the stranger to go and I look for excuses for Him to stay the night so we can hear more. Thankfully, He agrees to have supper with us.  As He breaks the bread, I recognize those hands and the manner in which He breaks the bread!  I finally look across the table into his eyes about the same time as Cleopas.  It is Jesus!  As soon as we recognize him, He disappears!  We had been talking to Jesus the whole time and we didn’t recognize Him!

With intense excitement and joy, Cleopas and I jump up and run the 7 miles back to Jerusalem in the dusk that eventually turns our path to darkness!   We must tell the 11 and the others who were behind closed doors when we left them. They, too, share our confusion and disappointment.

When we arrive,  we find them excited and questioning  Simon Peter about his encounter with! There is a strange mixture of doubt and hope in the room.  We then  begin to tell them what had happened over the last several hours.  Still some doubt, but hope is getting brighter by the moment.  As we are talking with them and answering their questions, Jesus appears in the room!

Everyone jumps back.  They think they are seeing a spirit, but Jesus tells them it is Him and that He is not a spirit. To prove it, He invites them to touch Him and He asks for something to eat.  We give Him some  fish and some honeycomb.  My heart beats fast!

After everyone settles down and the scales of their eyes begin to fall away as it did with Cleopas and me, Jesus repeats  the same type of study we heard on the road to Emmaus.  This time, He uses the entire Tanakh including the Psalms to explain how He is found all through scripture. All the disciples begin to understand that He had to die, but that He would rise on the third day.  How could we have missed this?  It was right there!

Then He said to us,

These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you.  that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.  And He opened our understanding that we might comprehend the Scriptures.”

Now our hearts are filled with joy and conviction!  We spend the next hour or so talking with Jesus.  Then He tells us that the Father will send us the gift of the Holy Spirit, but we must wait for it and stay in the city.  Our message will go to the world in power.  It will be a message of repentance and forgiveness of sins!

He is risen!

Do we need  Jesus to open our understanding of Scriptures?  Have we missed Jesus as we have read the Old Testament?  What detail did Jesus teach these disciples when He explained passages from all the books of the Old Testament?  Is the Old Testament not relevant to New Testament Christians?  Have we missed something in our understanding of Jesus?  Thomas was the only one not there in that room when Jesus appeared and taught them from the scripture about himself.

Next, we will take a look at Jesus through the eyes of a well-known doubter,  Thomas.  We will attempt to understand why the resurrection of Jesus is an absolute cornerstone of the Christian faith. In fact, without it, Paul says we are most pitiful of all men. But, after we see through the eyes of Thomas we will exclaim as he did:

“My Lord and My God.”  John 20:28

"He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. Colossians 1:28
